Daena (Nashville, TN) - “Overrated”

After developing her sound as an artist through various projects over the years, Nashville-based artist daena has come into her own with her debut summer single “Overrated”. She delivers the shimmering, indie pop anthem filled with glittery synths, layered vocals and a retro vibe. The track takes influences from artists like HAIM or Betty Who, blending honest lyrics with a fresh take on nostalgia.

As a queer woman, daena hopes to be a role model for other young people in the community. “It’s important to help normalize queer relationships, which is something I realized when writing Overrated” daena says. “Love is universal, regardless of gender identity, sexual orientation or anything else - and it’s okay to feel that love as strongly as you do”.

Bell’s Atlas (Oakland, CA) - “Jyeah”

Soulful noise pop, inspired, propellent psych pop… Trying to nail down the sound of Bells Atlas is a bit like narrating the inner workings of a kaleidoscope – where it's more about tripping out than nailing it down.

A surreal blend of r&b, psychedelia, jazz, and pop, rooted in the cultural bellwether of Oakland, CA, Bells Atlas has supported a number of international artists and shared the stage with acts such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Badbadnotgood, Bilal, Meshell Ndegeocello, W. Kamau Bell, Angélique Kidjo and more. They have also been making a name for themselves nationally as the touring band for NPR’s Snap Judgment since 2016, and recently wrapped up a sold-out tour supporting Bermuda Triangle, side-project of Alabama Shakes lead singer Brittany Howard.

Channeling at once the ramshackle lo-fi beats of Tune-Yards and the sighing lullabies of Sade, Bells is like the passing bubbles of an unknown aquatic life-form, music percolates from depths untaken, playing in a deep blue pool of life, death and the fluid in-between.

Rabbit Folk (Chicago, IL) - “To Hell and Back”

"We are a queer-fronted, Chicago-based band. We are influenced by Elliott Smith and the Kinks. We're bad at bios and badass at music."

Pikelet (Melbourne, Australia) - “Plovers”

Pikelet is the name used in colonial Australia and some parts of the UK for small pancakes that are typically a little sweet.

Evelyn named this project Pikelet many years ago, when they were 23, in honour of the resourceful ways their mum made very little money stretch in order to feed her three kids. It was a musical project started from borrowed equipment, so it made sense.

Since 2007, Morris has released five albums as Pikelet, an experimental pop act, winning the Age Music Victoria Award for Best Experimental Musician and being shortlist for the Australian Music Prize. They have also played across multiple bands and performed exensively in improvisonational settings. Their last album as Pikelet, called Goodbye, will be released in 2019.

Since 2007, Morris has released five albums as Pikelet, an experimental pop act, winning the Alongside their music practice, Morris co-founded LISTEN in 2014, an advocacy group focused on creating discourse around and documentation of gender diversity and gender politics in music in Australia. The organisation has been instrumental in changing representation in Australian music.

Mylo Choy (Brooklyn, NY) - “All The Sun”

Mylo is a musician and artist living in Brooklyn who began writing songs privately when they were 11 years old. Mylo admires the healing power of music and, now playing to a wider audience, aspires to create music that keeps people company when they are lonely and encourages connection when people are together. Mylo spent much of their life between contrasting environments, and they are inspired by nature’s ability to offer peace and perspective. As a gender non-conforming and mixed-race person, Mylo envisions creating spaces where people feel like they belong. Mylo Choy’s bedroom-folk sound reflects without dwelling and soothes without escaping. They embrace both chaos and quiet, working to create stillness we can have anywhere.

Secret Emchy Society (Oakland, CA) - “Songs Are All We’re Left With”

The Secret Emchy Society plays dark, sexy, boozy ballads, off-kilter anthems, and foot stompin' heart breakin' cowboy songs about good friends and hard times. Frontperson Cindy Emch sings deeply personal, fearless, and passionate ballads for the marginalized and festive alike. Pairs well with whisky and hitting the streets. As a queer country artist it can be quite the slog to get heard by either the country music community OR the queer community. The opportunity to be showcased on a podcast that is of my own community feels pretty epic and amazing.
